Overview

This full-time senior leadership position, reporting to a Provincial Board of Directors, is based in Edmonton, Alberta.

Alberta Native Friendship Centres Association (ANFCA) is seeking a well-informed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the provincial Association of Alberta Friendship Centres into the future. The Association is planning for a smooth leadership transition in response to the upcoming retirement of their long-serving CEO by the end of 2025.

Increasingly, Friendship Centres are playing vital service delivery roles across the region and are finding new and innovative ways to support the growing number of urban Indigenous people residing in small, rural communities and larger metropolitan municipalities across the region. ANFCA is a well-regarded charitable organization with a key mandate to provide support to and to build capacity for community-based member Friendship Centres. The CEO works at the direction of a Provincial Board of Directors and alongside the elected Executive Committee to carry out strategic priorities of the organization. A seasoned senior leadership team works alongside the CEO to ensure that overarching mission of the Association is conducted in an ethical and culturally informed way. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the Friendship Centres Movement, demonstrated knowledge of non-profit charitable Boards, and an in depth understanding of urban Indigenous needs and challenges.

In this vital role, the CEO is responsible for the overarching health and operational performance of the Association and is the collective voice of Alberta Friendship Centres on National Friendship Centre Movement priorities.

Location: Based in Edmonton, Alberta.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience, not less than ten years, in a senior, not for profit, leadership role, preferably within the Friendship Centre Movement. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – ability to solve complex problems in a culturally sensitive way. 
  • Ability to inspire and motivate staff and stakeholders, with a demonstrated ability to bring people together in meaningful ways. 
  • Strong business acumen, with demonstrated ability to oversee effective fund development strategies, and to ensure fiscal stewardship and transparency and accountability of public funds are maintained.  
  • Experience in strategic planning and implementation. 
  • Knowledge of best practices in non-profit management and governance. 
  • Passion for the mission and values of Alberta Native Friendship Centres Association and the Friendship Centre Movement. 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Overarching Leadership: 
    • Set the corporate tone of the organization and ensure cultural integrity is upheld. 
    • Oversee the implementation of the provincial strategic plan to advance the organization’s mission.  
    • Provide leadership and direction to ensure the organization achieves its goals in an ethically and culturally informed manner. 
    • Identify and pursue new opportunities for growth and expansion of services. 
  • Fundraising and Development: 
    • Acting in conjunction with Management Team, oversee and lead  
      • Fundraising efforts, including securing grants, donations, and sponsorships. 
      • Build and maintain relationships with donors, sponsors, and partners. 
      • Develop innovative fundraising strategies to ensure financial sustainability. 
  • Operational Management: 
    • Working in collaboration with Senior Leadership Team to  
      • Resolve complex problems, mediate conflicts, and negotiate on behalf of ANFCA. 
      • Oversee daily operations, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness. 
      • Manage and support a diverse team of staff and volunteers. 
      • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and organizational policies. 
  • Financial Oversight: 
    • Working in collaboration with CFO and Director of Operations 
      • Develop and manage the organization’s budget. 
      • Ensure sound financial practices and maintain financial stability. 
      • Ensure transparent stewardship of public funds are maintained and reported on  
  • Community Engagement: 
    • Leading organizational activities and public relations 
      • Establish and support meaningful relationships between ANFCA and membership 
      • Serve as the primary spokesperson and advocate for the organization. 
      • Foster strong relationships with community leaders, partners, and stakeholders. 
      • Represent the organization at public events and in the media. 
  • Board Relations:  
    • Working in collaboration with standing committees to ensure effective governance is maintained. 
      • Act in collaboration with ANFCA Executive Committee to carry out the work of the Board 
      • Provide regular updates and reports to the Board. 

CORE COMPETENCIES AND ATTRIBUTES:

  • Software Usage Proficiency: Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office capability including Teams and digital meeting platforms. 
  • Demonstrated commitment of understanding of both the Friendship Centre Movement and the rich and diverse Indigenous cultures that are present in Alberta. 
  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and protocols. 
  • Ability to travel. 

Requirements (or Qualifications)

  • Master’s degree in Non-Profit Management, Business Administration, or a related field, or a suitable combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience working in the Friendship Centres Movement with a deep understanding of urban Indigenous specific priorities.  
  • Demonstrated network within the government, philanthropic and non-profit sectors.
